Learning Tamil (தமிழ்) from Marathi is a bigger leap than a sister language would be, but a beautifully regular one — no gender agreement, no articles, and every word built by adding suffixes — and your doorway to one of the oldest surviving classical languages in the world. Both are written in Brahmic-derived scripts (Devanagari and Tamil). The letters are new, but the reading logic is identical: consonants carry an inherent vowel, and vowel marks attached above, below, or beside change it. You will decode Tamil far faster than any learner from the Latin world. Word order will not fight you: both Marathi and Tamil put the verb at the end (subject-object-verb) and mark relations with postpositions after the noun — "in the house" is "house-in" in both. Your existing sentence instinct works almost unchanged. Marathi and Tamil come from different families (Indo-Aryan vs Dravidian), so the vocabulary is genuinely new — but the phonological habits you already own, like retroflex consonants and clear long vowels, transfer cleanly across the family boundary.
Both Marathi and Tamil place the verb at the end of a sentence (SOV). A neutral sentence translates across as "मी मराठी शिकत आहे." → "நான் தமிழ் கற்கிறேன்.", which is exactly where the word-order discipline lives. Both languages mark relations with postpositions after the noun, so "in the house" is built as "house-in" in Tamil too. Marathi keeps a two-gender system; Tamil keeps gender only for people. Watch the noun, not the logic.
Drop the aspiration puff in Tamil: it distinguishes nothing and sounds harsh. Say p/t/k/g crisp like Tamil speakers do, unlearning the Marathi habit of kh/gh sounds.
Retroflex consonants (including the rare ழ/ഴ) already exist in Marathi, so your tongue knows the position — only the exact sounds differ.
Long versus short vowels is meaningful in Tamil: கல் (stone) vs கால் (leg) change word meaning. Hold a double vowel about twice as long as a single one.
ழ is the classic Tamil sound — the tongue tip curls back and air rushes past it, a buzzing sound that exists in almost no other language. Train it in வாழை (plantain) and வேண்டும்.
Two kinds of "l": dental ல and retroflex ள are different letters — கலம் (vessel) vs களம் (field).

Tamil has the longest unbroken literary tradition of any Indian language — inscriptions over 2,000 years old and 2,300-year-old Sangam poetry. Modern spoken Tamil is relaxed about spelling, but the classic grammar (Tolkāppiyam) still structures it.
Tamil is Dravidian — a family unrelated to Indo-Aryan Hindi. Its syntax is SOV, agglutinative, and article-free. The sounds (ழ, ள, no aspiration) and the rounded script with short vowel marks are all its own. That independence is exactly what makes it fascinating.
Spoken Tamil first — it is what you hear everywhere and it maps cleanly onto the script once you know the sound set. The formal literary style is a later layer. The slow audio in this tool uses clear spoken Tamil.
