Learning Gujarati (ગુજરાતી) from Marathi is one of the easiest possible starting points for an Indo-Aryan speaker — familiar sounds, familiar word order, and a Brahmic script you already read, wrapped around new words — and your doorway to the language of Gandhi, business networks, and temple towns. Both are written in Brahmic-derived scripts (Devanagari and Gujarati). The letters are new, but the reading logic is identical: consonants carry an inherent vowel, and vowel marks attached above, below, or beside change it. You will decode Gujarati far faster than any learner from the Latin world. Word order will not fight you: both Marathi and Gujarati put the verb at the end (subject-object-verb) and mark relations with postpositions after the noun — "in the house" is "house-in" in both. Your existing sentence instinct works almost unchanged. Marathi and Gujarati are both Indo-Aryan languages that share a deep Sanskrit heritage, so expect familiar vocabulary roots, SOV order, and the same postposition habit — the real work is new words and a new alphabet.
Both Marathi and Gujarati place the verb at the end of a sentence (SOV). A neutral sentence translates across as "मी मराठी शिकत आहे." → "હું ગુજરાતી શીખી રહ્યો છું.", which is exactly where the word-order discipline lives. Both languages mark relations with postpositions after the noun, so "in the house" is built as "house-in" in Gujarati too. Gender behaves the same way in both (two), so one less transfer skill.
Aspirated and unaspirated stops work exactly as in Marathi — k vs kh, p vs ph. Only the exact pitch and the set of letters differ, so you already have the muscle memory.
Retroflex consonants (ṭ, ḍ, ṇ) already exist in Marathi, so your tongue knows the position — only the exact sounds differ.
ળ is a retroflex lateral — the tongue tip curls back and air passes around the sides, a sound no English speaker has. Practise it in કેળ (plantain) and ગોળ (jaggery).
Gujarati is famous for "schwa deletion": the Devanagari-style inherent "a" is often dropped, so words are shorter than they look

हिंदी प्रमाणेच, गुजराती अशी इच्छा व्यक्त करते "to me ... is needed": मला पाणी पाहिजे.

Very similar complexity: same Brahmic logic, same SOV order, same two genders, same aspirated consonants. The difficulty is mainly the script's habit of dropping vowels — words are shorter than their spelling suggests, so audio-based practice (like this tool) is essential.
The script writes most consonants without their middle vowel — નમસ્તે looks like "nmst". This is called schwa deletion and it is standard. Read with the spoken word in your ear and the pattern becomes effortless.
It is the home language of enormous trading and tech diaspora networks from London to Houston to Nairobi. For business communities in Gujarat, Mumbai, South Africa, and the UK, even basic Gujarati opens doors.
