Learning Kannada (ಕನ್ನಡ) from Tamil is nearer to an extension of what you already know than a brand-new language — the sounds, the SOV grammar, and the writing work the same way — and your doorway to one of India's oldest languages, with 2,000 years of literature. Both are written in Brahmic-derived scripts (Tamil and Kannada). The letters are new, but the reading logic is identical: consonants carry an inherent vowel, and vowel marks attached above, below, or beside change it. You will decode Kannada far faster than any learner from the Latin world. Word order will not fight you: both Tamil and Kannada put the verb at the end (subject-object-verb) and mark relations with postpositions after the noun — "in the house" is "house-in" in both. Your existing sentence instinct works almost unchanged. Both belong to the Dravidian family, which means shared grammar instincts: SOV order, postpositions, no phonemic aspiration, and verb building by suffixes. Vocabulary roots differ city to city, but the machinery already works in your head.
Both Tamil and Kannada place the verb at the end of a sentence (SOV). A neutral sentence translates across as "நான் தமிழ் கற்கிறேன்." → "ನಾನು ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ.", which is exactly where the word-order discipline lives. Both languages mark relations with postpositions after the noun, so "in the house" is built as "house-in" in Kannada too. Gender behaves the same way in both (natural), so one less transfer skill.
Retroflex consonants (ṭ, ḍ, ṇ) already exist in Tamil, so your tongue knows the position — only the exact sounds differ.
Vowel length works like Tamil: short and long vowels are distinguished in Kannada too, so your ear already hears the difference.
Kannada consonants are clean and unaspirated — क-style puffing (kh, gh) does not belong. Let p/t/k/g be crisp without breath.
ಳ is a retroflex lateral (air around the tongue sides, tip curled) — train it in ಕೇಳು (to hear) and ಹಳೆಯ (old).

தேவைகள் உள்ளன "to me X is needed": எனக்கு தண்ணீர் வேண்டும்.
(spoken as short vowels)
ನನಗೆ ನೀರು ಬೇಕು. (long vowels held)

If you already speak Hindi/Bengali etc., the sounds (retroflex, no aspiration) will partly transfer, but the vocabulary and suffix-heavy grammar are genuinely Dravidian and new. English and Dravidian speakers alike find the "no gender" simplicity a relief after Indo-Aryan's two-gender systems.
Yes, and it rewards you: it is perfectly phonetic and shares the vowel-mark logic of all Brahmic scripts. If you read any Devanagari-family script the shapes are different but the system is the same — some letters even look similar (ಕ to क, ಸ to स).
Agglutination: Kannada prefers piling suffixes onto the root (ಬಂದು + ವುದು + ಇಲ್ಲ = "has not come yet") where English uses separate words. Learn to hear the root inside the long word — you will recognize it from the verb lists in this tool.
