Learning Marathi (मराठी) from Tamil is a familiar-feeling language with clear rules — the hardest new muscle is the script, not the grammar — and your doorway to the language of Mumbai, the Maratha empire, and one of India's largest literatures. Both are written in Brahmic-derived scripts (Tamil and Devanagari). The letters are new, but the reading logic is identical: consonants carry an inherent vowel, and vowel marks attached above, below, or beside change it. You will decode Devanagari far faster than any learner from the Latin world. Word order will not fight you: both Tamil and Marathi put the verb at the end (subject-object-verb) and mark relations with postpositions after the noun — "in the house" is "house-in" in both. Your existing sentence instinct works almost unchanged. Tamil and Marathi come from different families (Dravidian vs Indo-Aryan), so the vocabulary is genuinely new — but the phonological habits you already own, like retroflex consonants and clear long vowels, transfer cleanly across the family boundary.
Both Tamil and Marathi place the verb at the end of a sentence (SOV). A neutral sentence translates across as "நான் தமிழ் கற்கிறேன்." → "मी मराठी शिकत आहे.", which is exactly where the word-order discipline lives. Both languages mark relations with postpositions after the noun, so "in the house" is built as "house-in" in Marathi too. Tamil keeps gender only for people; Marathi keeps a two-gender system. Watch the noun, not the logic.
Marathi makes aspiration phonemic: क (k) vs ख (kh), च (ch) vs छ (chh) change the meaning of a word. Your Tamil ears are used to plain consonants — add a clear breathy puff for the aspirated set.
Retroflex consonants (ṭ, ḍ, ṇ) already exist in Tamil, so your tongue knows the position — only the exact sounds differ.
Marathi does not lean on long/short vowel length the way Tamil does — keep vowels steady and equal.
The retroflex and dental sets both exist and are phonemic, as in Hindi — ट/त, ड/द contrast.

தேவைகள் டேட்டிவ் முறையைப் பின்பற்ற வேண்டும்: मला पाणी हवे आहे ("to me water wanted is") இல்லை "I want" இணைப்பதற்கான வினைச்சொல் - வலுவான தேவைகளுக்கு हवे மற்றும் கண்ணியமான விருப்பங்களுக்கு पाहिजे.

Very close in script and grammar — Marathi uses the same Devanagari, the same SOV order, and the same two genders and aspirated consonants. The differences are vocabulary (Marathi borrows more from Sanskrit), exact verb forms, and the fact that Marathi keeps the inherent "a", making pronunciation crisper and easier to read aloud.
Standard Marathi is the Pune model; Mumbai speech mixes in Hindi and English words freely. Learning standard first is the safe choice — everyone in Maharashtra understands it, and you will soon pick up the city flavor by ear.
Reading Devanagari aloud correctly, because Marathi never drops vowels. If you already read Hindi, unlearn the "a"-dropping habit and pronounce every symbol. It instantly makes your Marathi sound native.
