Learning Telugu (తెలుగు) from Marathi is a bigger leap than a sister language would be, but a beautifully regular one — no gender agreement, no articles, and every word built by adding suffixes — and your doorway to the melodious "Italian of the East", spoken across two states and the film industry. Both are written in Brahmic-derived scripts (Devanagari and Telugu). The letters are new, but the reading logic is identical: consonants carry an inherent vowel, and vowel marks attached above, below, or beside change it. You will decode Telugu far faster than any learner from the Latin world. Word order will not fight you: both Marathi and Telugu put the verb at the end (subject-object-verb) and mark relations with postpositions after the noun — "in the house" is "house-in" in both. Your existing sentence instinct works almost unchanged. Marathi and Telugu come from different families (Indo-Aryan vs Dravidian), so the vocabulary is genuinely new — but the phonological habits you already own, like retroflex consonants and clear long vowels, transfer cleanly across the family boundary.
Both Marathi and Telugu place the verb at the end of a sentence (SOV). A neutral sentence translates across as "मी मराठी शिकत आहे." → "నేను తెలుగు నేర్చుకుంటున్నాను.", which is exactly where the word-order discipline lives. Both languages mark relations with postpositions after the noun, so "in the house" is built as "house-in" in Telugu too. Marathi keeps a two-gender system; Telugu keeps gender only for people. Watch the noun, not the logic.
Drop the aspiration puff in Telugu: it distinguishes nothing and sounds harsh. Say p/t/k/g crisp like Telugu speakers do, unlearning the Marathi habit of kh/gh sounds.
Retroflex consonants (ṭ, ḍ, ṇ) already exist in Marathi, so your tongue knows the position — only the exact sounds differ.
Long versus short vowels is meaningful in Telugu: కల (dream) vs కాలం (time) change word meaning. Hold a double vowel about twice as long as a single one.
ట/డ/ణ retroflex vs త/ద/న dental — Telugu keeps both sets distinct, as Tamil does. Curl the tongue for the retroflex pair.
The voiced "v" slides toward "w" in everyday speech (వెళ్ళు sounds like "wellu") — imitate the relaxed glide.

गरज आहे "to me X wanted": నాకు నీళ్ళు కావాలి.
(word order scrambled: English habit)
నాకు నీళ్ళు కావాలి.
अगदी वॉन्ट पॅटर्न SOV आहे — "टू-मी वॉटर वॉन्ट". కావాలి हा शब्द अगदी शेवटी आहे.
అప్పుడు నేను వెళ్ళాను. (wrong person ending)
నేను వెళ్ళాను. / వెళ్ళాడు for "he".

Refreshingly light in two ways: no articles and no arbitrary gender for the thousands of non-human nouns. The main work is suffixes (plural -లు, dative -కి, person endings) and SOV order. Most learners find verbs the biggest but most regular task.
Telugu letters are the roundest of the Brahmic family (historically squared-off shapes softened into curves) and some ligatures are complex. The logic is the same as Kannada's — they are sister scripts — so learning Kannada opens Telugu and vice versa.
Nineteenth-century linguists compared Telugu's vowel-rich, vowel-final rhythm to Italian — almost every word ends in a vowel. Match the "v→w" glide and drawn-out vowels and your Telugu will immediately sound melodic and natural.
