Learning English from Hindi

Learning English (English) from Hindi is one of the most practical unlocks in the world — no genders, minimal verb endings, and the global vocabulary you already half know — and your doorway to the global language of business, technology, and the internet. English uses the 26-letter Latin alphabet with notoriously irregular spelling — "though", "through", and "thought" rhyme to the eye only. Invest early in learning how letters map to sounds differently from Devanagari, and use audio to check every new word. Word order gets easier: Hindi already puts the verb at the end like Japanese, but English instead keeps it right after the subject and marks relations with prepositions before the noun (in the house) where you are used to "house-in". English word order will feel oddly early. Hindi and English are related through the wider Indo-European family, so some structural intuitions carry over even when the words do not.

How the two languages compare

Hindi already puts the verb at the end (SOV); English instead keeps it right after the subject (SVO), and does not keep the relational word after the noun. A neutral sentence translates across as "मैं हिन्दी सीख रहा हूँ।" → "I am learning English.", which is exactly where the word-order discipline lives. English uses prepositions before the noun, the mirror image of Hindi's "house-in" habit. Hindi keeps a two-gender system; English keeps no grammatical gender. Watch the noun, not the logic.

Pronunciation challenges for Hindi speakers

1

Drop the aspiration puff in English: it distinguishes nothing and sounds harsh. Say p/t/k/g crisp like English speakers do, unlearning the Hindi habit of kh/gh sounds.

2

English does not lean on long/short vowel length the way Hindi does — keep vowels steady and equal.

3

The "th" in "think" uses the tongue between the teeth — Indian languages substitute t/d, which changes the word (three vs tree).

4

Final consonants and soft endings are often very light: "walked" ends in a soft t, not a full syllable.

Grammar notes for this pair

"I bought book" गलत है - यह होना ही चाहिए "I bought a book" या "the book". यह लेख प्रणाली उन भारतीय भाषाओं के बोलने वालों के लिए एक क्लासिक बाधा है जो बिना किसी लेख का उपयोग करते हैं।

शब्द क्रम व्याकरण करता है

अंग्रेजी शब्द क्रम पर निर्भर करती है: "The dog bites the man" बनाम "the man bites the dog" केवल स्थिति के आधार पर अर्थ बदलें।

Example sentences

मैं पानी पीता हूँ।

→ I drink water.

मुझे पानी चाहिए।

→ I would like some water.

मैं घर जा रहा हूँ।

→ I am going home.

यह मेरी किताब है।

→ This is my book.

मैं हिन्दी सीख रहा हूँ।

→ I am learning English.

आप कहाँ से हैं?

→ Where are you from?

Common mistakes to avoid

Yesterday I go to market.

Yesterday I went to the market.

अंग्रेजी क्रिया पर पिछले समय को चिह्नित करती है (जाओ → गया) और एक विशिष्ट स्थान से पहले लेख "द" की आवश्यकता होती है। कालवाचक शब्द (कल) भूतकाल की क्रिया की आवश्यकता को दूर नहीं करते हैं। हिंदी भाषियों के लिए क्रिया-आखिरी आदत एक जाल है - अंग्रेजी क्रिया को कर्ता के ठीक बाद रखती है।

I am having two brothers.

I have two brothers.

कब्ज़ा और मूल अर्थ के लिए "हैविंग" ("आई एम हैविंग") भारतीय अंग्रेजी है; मानक अंग्रेजी आपके पास जो कुछ भी है उसके लिए सरल वर्तमान "है" का उपयोग करती है। हिंदी भाषियों के लिए क्रिया-आखिरी आदत एक जाल है - अंग्रेजी क्रिया को कर्ता के ठीक बाद रखती है।

Please let me know your good name.

Please let me know your name.

"अच्छा नाम" एक विनम्र भारतीय मुहावरे का सीधा अनुवाद है। अंग्रेजी में विशेषण का प्रयोग नहीं किया जाता - आपका नाम केवल आपका नाम है। हिंदी भाषियों के लिए क्रिया-आखिरी आदत एक जाल है - अंग्रेजी क्रिया को कर्ता के ठीक बाद रखती है।

I am going to home.

I am going home.

"होम" यहां एक क्रिया-विशेषण है और इसमें कोई पूर्वसर्ग नहीं है - "टू होम" मानक अंग्रेजी में गलत है ("बैक होम" ठीक है)। हिंदी भाषियों के लिए क्रिया-आखिरी आदत एक जाल है - अंग्रेजी क्रिया को कर्ता के ठीक बाद रखती है।

Frequently Asked Questions

English has no gender, very little verb inflection, and shares the Latin alphabet logic that most Indians already read for work. The fastest path is speaking early with feedback on the three big errors: articles, tense, and word order. Regular practice builds fluency measured in months, not years.

Both are fully mutually intelligible. Word choice differs (lift/elevator, flat/apartment) and the accent differs slightly, but any Indian employer or IELTS/TOEFL examiner accepts either. Learn one consistently; the audio in this tool uses standard American English, which is also the accent behind most global software.

The "th" sounds. They exist as a pair (voiceless as in think, voiced as in this) and no Indian language has them. Practise with the tongue lightly between the teeth. Together with unstressed "schwa" vowels, fixing these two immediately makes your English more natural.
