Learning Hindi from English

Learning Hindi from English gives you access to a language spoken by over 600 million people across India and the diaspora. Hindi's grammar is logical and flexible: it uses postpositions (like Japanese) instead of English prepositions, verbs agree with the subject in gender based on the ending (masculine -ा, feminine -ी), and the script (Devanagari) is completely phonetic — every letter maps to exactly one sound, unlike English spelling. The hardest parts for English speakers are the retroflex consonants (ट, ड, ण), the aspirated/unaspirated distinction (क vs ख), and gendered verb agreement. The Devanagari script takes about two weeks of daily practice to read fluently.

How the two languages compare

Hindi is an SOV language: "मैं पानी पीता हूँ" literally reads "I water drink." English is SVO, so you must train yourself to put the object before the verb. Instead of prepositions, Hindi uses postpositions attached after the noun: "घर में" = "in the home" (house-in). The verb agrees with the subject in gender and number: a male speaker says "मैं गया" (I went), a female speaker "मैं गयी" (I went). Subject pronouns are usually dropped because the verb ending carries the meaning.

Pronunciation challenges for English speakers

1

Retroflex vs dental consonants: Hindi ट (retroflex t) vs त (dental t) are different letters with different tongue positions English merges.

2

Aspiration is meaningful: क (k) vs ख (kh, with a puff of air) change word meanings. English aspirates carelessly; Hindi requires precision.

3

The four n-sounds (न, ण, ञ, ङ) collapse into one in English ears and mouths.

4

Hindi is syllable-timed: vowels hold equal duration, unlike the stress-timed rhythm of English.

5

Learn the Devanagari marks: matras (vowel signs attached to consonants) mean a consonant without a mark is followed by an inherent "a" sound.

Grammar notes for this pair

Postpositions instead of prepositions

English "in the house" becomes Hindi "घर में" (house-in). The word "में" (in) comes AFTER the noun, exactly like "ni" in Japanese. This single reversal covers most prepositions: से (from/with), को (to), पर (on).

Gendered verb agreement

Past-tense verbs agree with the subject's gender and number. A man says "मैं गया" (I went); a woman says "मैं गयी". The subject pronoun can then be dropped: "गया" already means "he went" contextually.

The dative subject construction

"I want water" is not "I want" + object in Hindi — it is "to-me water is-needed": मुझे पानी चाहिए. Emotions and needs follow this pattern (मुझे भूख लगी है = I am hungry, literally hunger is-attached to-me). Do not translate "I want" directly.

Default object before verb, but flexible

Hindi is SOV but allows scrambling for emphasis: "पानी मुझे चाहिए" stresses the water. English speakers can lean on the default SOV order first, then add flexibility.

Example sentences

I drink water.

→ मैं पानी पीता हूँ।

I would like water.

→ मुझे पानी चाहिए।

I am learning Hindi.

→ मैं हिन्दी सीख रहा हूँ।

She goes home.

→ वह घर जाती है।

This is my book.

→ यह मेरी किताब है।

I like the food.

→ मुझे खाना अच्छा लगता है।

Common mistakes to avoid

मैं पानी चाहता हूँ।

मुझे पानी चाहिए।

Desire in Hindi uses the dative "mujhe" + "chaahiye", NOT "main chaahtaa hoon". This is the classic English-speaker mistake — the "I want" pattern does not transfer.

वह घर जाता है। (about a woman)

वह घर जाती है।

Verb agreement follows the subject's gender. "जाता" is masculine; a female subject needs "जाती". Listen for the -ा/-ी ending change.

यह बुक है।

यह किताब है।

Do not sprinkle English nouns into Hindi sentences. Hindi has its own vocabulary — किताब (book), कमरा (room), समय (time). Mixing English nouns is a visible crutch.

मैं है ठीक।

मैं ठीक हूँ।

The copula "है" is only for third person singular; with मैं you need "हूँ", with तुम "हो". Tag the correct form of होना to the subject.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, and it is the fastest win in Hindi. Devanagari is perfectly phonetic — read it and you can pronounce anything correctly. About 46 characters plus the vowel-marks, and two weeks of regular practice is enough for fluent reading. The vocabulary and pronunciation tools in this app pair script with sound so you learn both together.

Hindi is an SOV (subject-object-verb) language, like Japanese, Korean, and Turkish. The verb always comes last in a neutral sentence. English is SVO. Your brain will initially want to say "मैं जाता हूँ घर" (I go home) — practice the SOV order until it is automatic.

Pronunciation is the harder hurdle because aspiration and retroflex/dental distinctions change word meanings and require new mouth movements. Grammar is actually friendlier than German or Russian — no cases to decline, flexible word order, and logical verb agreement. Focus your first month on sounds and the script.

No. The choice between आप (formal), तुम (informal), and तू (intimate) encodes social distance and politeness. आप is safe for strangers, elders, and workplaces; तुम for friends and peers; तू is very intimate or disrespectful if misused. Match the form to the relationship and the verb endings change accordingly.
