Learning Malayalam (മലയാളം) from Hindi is a bigger leap than a sister language would be, but a beautifully regular one — no gender agreement, no articles, and every word built by adding suffixes — and your doorway to the melodious language of Kerala's backwaters and cinema. Both are written in Brahmic-derived scripts (Devanagari and Malayalam). The letters are new, but the reading logic is identical: consonants carry an inherent vowel, and vowel marks attached above, below, or beside change it. You will decode Malayalam far faster than any learner from the Latin world. Word order will not fight you: both Hindi and Malayalam put the verb at the end (subject-object-verb) and mark relations with postpositions after the noun — "in the house" is "house-in" in both. Your existing sentence instinct works almost unchanged. Hindi and Malayalam come from different families (Indo-Aryan vs Dravidian), so the vocabulary is genuinely new — but the phonological habits you already own, like retroflex consonants and clear long vowels, transfer cleanly across the family boundary.
Both Hindi and Malayalam place the verb at the end of a sentence (SOV). A neutral sentence translates across as "मैं हिन्दी सीख रहा हूँ।" → "ഞാൻ മലയാളം പഠിക്കുന്നു.", which is exactly where the word-order discipline lives. Both languages mark relations with postpositions after the noun, so "in the house" is built as "house-in" in Malayalam too. Hindi keeps a two-gender system; Malayalam keeps gender only for people. Watch the noun, not the logic.
Drop the aspiration puff in Malayalam: it distinguishes nothing and sounds harsh. Say p/t/k/g crisp like Malayalam speakers do, unlearning the Hindi habit of kh/gh sounds.
Retroflex consonants (including the rare ழ/ഴ) already exist in Hindi, so your tongue knows the position — only the exact sounds differ.
Vowel length works like Hindi: short and long vowels are distinguished in Malayalam too, so your ear already hears the difference.
ഴ is the hardest — the tongue tip curls back and the air passes beside it, half-way between a "j" and an "r". Hear it in വേണം (needed) and copy the slow audio.
Long and short vowels are phonemic: അള (measure) vs ആള് (person). Hold the long vowels twice as long.

(English word order: വെള്ളം first)
എനിക്ക് വെള്ളം വേണം.
यहां तक कि टुकड़े भी SOV हैं: "मुझे पानी चाहिए"। कभी भी वस्तु को सामने न रखें - क्रिया (या वांछित शब्द വേണം) वाक्य को बंद कर देती है।
അവൾ പോകുന്നു is masculine
അവൾ (she) vs അവൻ (he) — but the verb is identical
लिंग के आधार पर क्रियाएँ नहीं बदलतीं, केवल सर्वनाम बदलते हैं। क्रिया में हिंदी शैली के लिंग समझौते को आयात न करें - मलयालम इसे सर्वनाम पर रखता है।
ഞാൻ വരും (wrong register for a question)
ഞാൻ വരാം, അതോ വരില്ല? — or the full future
प्रश्न और भविष्य का स्वर घोषणात्मक शब्दों से भिन्न होता है। कथन को शब्द-दर-शब्द अनुवाद करने के बजाय अंत में वृद्धि को सुनें।

It has more consonant distinctions than almost any Indian language — a full retroflex set plus ഴ, റ, and nasal series. But there is no gender agreement and no aspiration, so grammar is light. Invest the first weeks in the sound set — Malayalam rewards it with the clearest syllable rhythm of the Dravidian family.
For speaking, you can start with romanization, but the script is the key to reading menus, signs, and film subtitles in Kerala, and it is one of the most regular scripts in India once you see that many "long words" are just letter ligatures stacked together.
Yes — the written form and fast colloquial speech differ noticeably, more than in Hindi or Telugu. Follow film and everyday audio for the spoken style; the tool's slow audio bridges exactly that gap.
