Learning Tamil (தமிழ்) from Malayalam is nearer to an extension of what you already know than a brand-new language — the sounds, the SOV grammar, and the writing work the same way — and your doorway to one of the oldest surviving classical languages in the world. Both are written in Brahmic-derived scripts (Malayalam and Tamil). The letters are new, but the reading logic is identical: consonants carry an inherent vowel, and vowel marks attached above, below, or beside change it. You will decode Tamil far faster than any learner from the Latin world. Word order will not fight you: both Malayalam and Tamil put the verb at the end (subject-object-verb) and mark relations with postpositions after the noun — "in the house" is "house-in" in both. Your existing sentence instinct works almost unchanged. Both belong to the Dravidian family, which means shared grammar instincts: SOV order, postpositions, no phonemic aspiration, and verb building by suffixes. Vocabulary roots differ city to city, but the machinery already works in your head.
Both Malayalam and Tamil place the verb at the end of a sentence (SOV). A neutral sentence translates across as "ഞാൻ മലയാളം പഠിക്കുന്നു." → "நான் தமிழ் கற்கிறேன்.", which is exactly where the word-order discipline lives. Both languages mark relations with postpositions after the noun, so "in the house" is built as "house-in" in Tamil too. Gender behaves the same way in both (natural), so one less transfer skill.
Retroflex consonants (including the rare ழ/ഴ) already exist in Malayalam, so your tongue knows the position — only the exact sounds differ.
Vowel length works like Malayalam: short and long vowels are distinguished in Tamil too, so your ear already hears the difference.
ழ is the classic Tamil sound — the tongue tip curls back and air rushes past it, a buzzing sound that exists in almost no other language. Train it in வாழை (plantain) and வேண்டும்.
Tamil has no aspirated stops: keep p/t/k crisp with no puff of air (no kh/gh as in Hindi).

ആഗ്രഹമാണ് "to me ... wanted": എനിക്ക് വെള്ളം വേണം.
A woman goes with bonal, never bonan.

Tamil has the longest unbroken literary tradition of any Indian language — inscriptions over 2,000 years old and 2,300-year-old Sangam poetry. Modern spoken Tamil is relaxed about spelling, but the classic grammar (Tolkāppiyam) still structures it.
Tamil is Dravidian — a family unrelated to Indo-Aryan Hindi. Its syntax is SOV, agglutinative, and article-free. The sounds (ழ, ள, no aspiration) and the rounded script with short vowel marks are all its own. That independence is exactly what makes it fascinating.
Spoken Tamil first — it is what you hear everywhere and it maps cleanly onto the script once you know the sound set. The formal literary style is a later layer. The slow audio in this tool uses clear spoken Tamil.
