Learning Hindi from Tamil

Learning Hindi (हिन्दी) from Tamil is a familiar-feeling language with clear rules — the hardest new muscle is the script, not the grammar — and your doorway to the most widely spoken language in India and a window into Bollywood. Both are written in Brahmic-derived scripts (Tamil and Devanagari). The letters are new, but the reading logic is identical: consonants carry an inherent vowel, and vowel marks attached above, below, or beside change it. You will decode Devanagari far faster than any learner from the Latin world. Word order will not fight you: both Tamil and Hindi put the verb at the end (subject-object-verb) and mark relations with postpositions after the noun — "in the house" is "house-in" in both. Your existing sentence instinct works almost unchanged. Tamil and Hindi come from different families (Dravidian vs Indo-Aryan), so the vocabulary is genuinely new — but the phonological habits you already own, like retroflex consonants and clear long vowels, transfer cleanly across the family boundary.

How the two languages compare

Both Tamil and Hindi place the verb at the end of a sentence (SOV). A neutral sentence translates across as "நான் தமிழ் கற்கிறேன்." → "मैं हिन्दी सीख रहा हूँ।", which is exactly where the word-order discipline lives. Both languages mark relations with postpositions after the noun, so "in the house" is built as "house-in" in Hindi too. Tamil keeps gender only for people; Hindi keeps a two-gender system. Watch the noun, not the logic.

Pronunciation challenges for Tamil speakers

1

Hindi makes aspiration phonemic: क (k) vs ख (kh), च (ch) vs छ (chh) change the meaning of a word. Your Tamil ears are used to plain consonants — add a clear breathy puff for the aspirated set.

2

Retroflex consonants (ṭ, ḍ, ṇ) already exist in Tamil, so your tongue knows the position — only the exact sounds differ.

3

Vowel length works like Tamil: short and long vowels are distinguished in Hindi too, so your ear already hears the difference.

4

Retroflex ट/ड vs dental त/द: the retroflex set curls the tongue to the roof of the mouth; the dental set touches the teeth. English speakers merge them.

5

Devanagari has no silent letters — every symbol is pronounced, which makes Hindi reading perfectly predictable.

Grammar notes for this pair

எங்கே ஆங்கிலம் சொல்கிறது "to the house", இந்தி சொல்கிறது "house-to".

Example sentences

Common mistakes to avoid

(about a woman)

Frequently Asked Questions

No — it is the fastest win. Devanagari is perfectly phonetic: each symbol maps to one sound, so you can read any word aloud correctly after mastering about 46 characters and the vowel marks. Two weeks of daily practice gives comfortable reading. This tool pairs every word with audio exactly for that.

The script is stable but speech links words: "मुझे पानी चाहिए" runs together (मुझे → मुझ). Everyday Hindi also borrows many Perso-Arabic words (सफ़र, ख़याल, चाय) alongside Sanskrit ones. Shadow the slow audio to hear the natural rhythm.

Very — it is not optional. Almost every noun is masculine or feminine and the verb ending follows it (बड़ा vs बड़ी, गया vs गयी). Learn each new noun with its agreement pattern and your accuracy jumps immediately.
